Ryan Dempster Breaks His Toe After Jumping Dugout Railing To Celebrate Win

Move over, Bill Gramatica, Ryan Dempster has just joined you on the list of athletes who have injured themselves while celebrating.

The Chicago Cubs pitcher will miss a few starts after he broke his right big toe by tripping over the dugout railing following Sunday’s win by the Cubs over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Dempster told the Chicago Tribune:

“Sunday after the game I was coming out of the dugout and stepping over the top of the railing there, I was sitting up on the ledge, and I caught my left foot on the rail as I was coming over and it just spun me around and slammed me into the ground. When I did it, I thought I just ripped my nail back on my foot. Unfortunately, the result wasn’t very funny. If you ask Derrek Lee, he thought it was pretty funny, because the first person I saw when I looked up was D-Lee, and he was laughing. I’m sure it looked hysterical from his angle.

“The unfortunate part was my foot, I guess just the way it hit- it came down straight into the ground. Came into the clubhouse and my toenail was ripped back and it was bleeding, and then I thought that was pretty much the end of it, thought I’d just tape it up.”

That sounds pleasant. At least Dempster managed to provide some momentary entertainment for Derrek Lee, but the rest of the Cubs probably aren’t laughing at their latest misfortune.

Injuries happen in sports, but the strange ones always seem to happen to the teams & players that have bad luck to begin with.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Jason LaRue is going to have nightmares about giant wieners for the next few weeks.

During yesterday’s game at Miller Park against the Milwaukee Brewers, LaRue exited the dugout just in time to find himself right in the middle of the Brewers’ famed Sausage Race.

The scared LaRue quickly bolted between the chorizo and the rest of the pack, but for a few seconds, it looked like there was going to be a scary man-on-meat collision.

A drunk Brewers fan got arrested and hauled off by the police, but not before he performed a strip show for fans in the outfield at Miller Park. He first took off his shirt, then dropped his pants to reveal his boxers. The best part: This happened on Mother’s Day.

That is a proud, proud moment for you and your mother, good sir.

The phone call to ask for bail money probably went something like this:

Drunk Shirtless Guy: “Hey, Ma!”

Mom: “Oh, my precious son, you called me on Mother’s Day!”

DSG: “What? I need your help. I got thrown in jail after taking my pants off at a baseball game.”

Mom: *quietly weeps into her beer*

Norm MacDonald appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, and as always failed to disappoint.

MacDonald is friends with Milwaukee Brewers announcer Bob Uecker, but didn’t hesitiate to tell a profanity-filled story about his friend and an encounter with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty.

Norm MacDonald, Bob Uecker, and John Fogerty… now that would be an interesting combination at a celebrity dinner, especially if they serve chicken.

There’s little scarier than sports than a well-hit ball back to the pitcher’s mound. The pitcher has just completed his motion and is left with no time to react to a ball hit at his head.

That’s just what happened during tonight’s game between the San Francisco Giants and the Milwaukee Brewers. During the 9th inning, Giants reliever Joe Martinez got hit in the head with a line drive off the bat of the Brewers Mike Cameron.

The sound of the ball hitting his head in the replay is just sickening.

Luckily, it appears that Joe Martinez is going to be alright. According to Giants executive executive Bobby Evans, “Martinez sustained a concussion but no broken bones, and . . . tests revealed no other significant injuries.”

That didn’t stop everyone from worrying about Martinez’s condition immediately. He tried to walk it off, but soon dropped to the ground. Meanwhile, Mike Cameron was visibly shaken from the moment he saw Martinez got hit.

After the game, Cameron said, “You just hope that the young man is all right, that everything is good and that he’s safe first and foremost. I just hope that he gets a chance to go back on the field again. I couldn’t stop shaking. It’s kind of a helpless feeling. I was just trying to pray for him because I know how dangerous that can be.”

As trainers attended to Martinez, his teammates could only watch in horror. “I’m still shaking, to tell you the truth,” catcher Bengie Molina said. “We’re human beings before baseball players. We have fathers, mothers and sons. You don’t want to see that on a baseball field. That ball went right to his head. He had no shot.”

Hopefully Joe Martinez will make a quick physical recovery and he won’t be affected mentally either. It’s going to be tough to want to get back on the mound after taking a shot to the head like that.

When searching for the perfect sunbathing location, most people would take into account the likelihood of getting hit by a hard object while laying in that location. Thus, the grass beyond the outfield fence at a baseball park might not be a great choice.

During yesterday’s Spring Training matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks, Corey Hart launched a home run off Dan Haren. The ball was heading straight toward a girl who was sunbathing in a bikini on the grass, but a guy who wanted that home run ball saved the day and kept her from being hit.

He got the ball, and she got a beer. Everyone went home happy.

As Mark Grace said, “I guess that’s one way to meet a young lady.” Pay attention to that advice. Mark Grace knows a lot about meeting young ladies.
