Tennis player Bojana Jovanovski goes to wrong Carlsbad for tennis tournament

Quick quiz: What state is Carlsbad in?

Some of you who are familiar with Carlsbad Caverns might say “New Mexico”, while Lego aficionados might say “California”. The correct answer, of course is “all of the above”, which is a fact Serbian tennis player Bojana Jovanovski and her travel agent are now aware of.

Following a tennis tournament in Washington, DC, Jovanovski flew to Dallas, then to Albuquerque, then to Carlsbad. Carlsbad, New Mexico, which was a problem, since her next tournament was in Carlsbad, California.

It took a while for Jovanovski to realize her mistake upon arriving in New Mexico.

From the LA Times:

“One man asked me at the airport …’What are you doing here? Are you playing tennis?’ ” Jovanovski said. “I said, “Yeah, it’s a tennis tournament.’ And he said, ‘Here?’ ”

When Jovanovski had trouble locating her cab, she finally got confirmation that she was in the wrong state.

“I was waiting for 15 minutes and nobody comes,” she said. “And I call again, and they say they are at the airport and they are looking for you. I said I am the only person here, how can you not see me?

“At that moment, the girl asked me on the telephone, are you in Carlsbad in California or in New Mexico?”

Jovanovski eventually made it to the correct state, arriving just 30 minutes before her match. She somehow managed to take the first set against Roberta Vinci despite having slept in an airport the night before, with the match finishing 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

She will have plenty of extra frequent flyer miles, which she can use to get to next year’s French Open in Paris, Texas.

Serena Williams visited The Daily Show last night to plug her new book, On The Line. In addition to learning about Serena’s singing ability, we also learned that Jon Stewart apparently has a thing for women who yell a lot and have arms that are as big as his head.

Yeah, that got a little bit creepy. Serena was clearly a bit uncomfortable there as what started as one joke just kept on going. Stewart was lucky he didn’t get the book shoved down his throat.

Inmates at Louisiana’s Orleans Parish Prison (You locked up in OPP? Yeah, you know me!) thought they had come up with a clever way to sneak drugs and other contraband into the jail: hiding the prohibited goods inside tennis balls.

But they didn’t count on Sheriff Marlin Gusman and his deputies. They’ve been intercepting the airborne tennis balls, which are thrown over perimeter fences by friends and family of inmates. Over a dozen people have been arrested as the result of the investigation of this scheme.

“They make contact with incarcerated and people inside and throw it over the jail wall,” Gusman said. “They cut the ball open and put drugs, pills, and (it’s an) easy throw to get it over the wall.”

Sure, this is the result of good police work, but they should have known something was wrong when Martina Hingis kept showing up to play tennis.

The entertaining team of John & Patrick McEnroe had a great target tonight during the U.S. Open match between Andy Murray and Ernests Gulbis.

An over-exuberant ball boy chased down an errant ball and tried to vault over the sideline advertising, only to slip on it and tumble face first into the ground.

The kid tried to shrug it off with a smile, but the McEnroes and the rest of the crowd in Flushing also had a good laugh at his expense for the next couple of minutes.

So let’s see here…

Possible injury… check
Failure in Queens… check

Someone get him a September call-up to the Mets.

Andy Roddick visited The Late Show with David Letterman last night just before the U.S. Open kicks off and showed the host a few things out on the tennis court.

Roddick served to the 62-year-old Letterman with predictable results. Even though the serves were “only” traveling 100mph, Letterman couldn’t return anything or even get out of the way until Andy slowed them down to 42 mph.

During the interview portion of the segment, Letterman asked about Andy’s recent battle with Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Roddick joked that he is definitely in Roger’s head now. At least he has a sense of humor about the fact that he will never, ever beat Federer.

Welcome To Wimbledon: Feel Free To Park On The Dead

Most people would stop their cars before they rolled on people’s graves. Not British tennis fans.

St Mary’s Church in Wimbledon Village has raised money for charity by allowing fans heading to Wimbledon to park on their premises.

In previous years, they have parked cars on the graves of people whose descendants cannot be traced, but this year someone screwed up and allowed cars to be parked on any grave. It doesn’t seem like anyone should be leaving their car on anyone’s grave, but who are we to argue with British custom?

One driver said, “We were told: ‘Go and reverse between these gravestones.’ I thought: ‘This is very odd’. But we did it and went to Wimbledon.” How lovely.

The practice has been stopped & the church has apologized, but not before graves were parked on for several days.

So if you see a bunch of angry zombie valets in London, you know where they’re headed.

Ballboys and ballgirls are the unsung heroes at tennis tournaments. Without them, there would be balls all over the court and nobody to get new balls to the players. There also would not be adequate padding on the umpire’s chair if they weren’t around.

Yesterday, Michael Llodra faced off against Tommy Haas. Haas made a short return that required Llodra to sprint back toward the net and the sideline. He didn’t get there in time, and to make matters worse crashed into ballgirl Erin Lorencin, who was sitting right next to the umpire’s chair.

After using her to break his fall, Llodra gave the girl a hug, and she appeared to be fine. Following the match she said, “”It is really embarrassing. My little brother was very pleased and laughing.”

Michael Llodra, however, was not fine. He suffered an injury in the collision and had to retire from Wimbledon.

As usual, London was lit up by Maria Sharapova this week, but in a different way than normal.

The tennis superstar paired with Sony Ericsson and a student from the London College of Fashion to demonstrate the latest in weird technology: A dress that flashes when your cell phone rings.

The idea behind the dress is that you can’t always hear your phone, so you might need a visual notification. Or you can just check your phone periodically like normal people.

“When you’re in a pub or a bar, you can never, ever hear your phone,” 20-year-old designer Georgie Davies said.

While the idea might be strange and will never sell, any time you can get Maria Sharapova to promote it, you’re doing something right.
