Pavel Nedved of Juventus made a spectacular volley over the weekend against Roma. Nedved’s goal was so amazing that teammate Vincenzo Iaquinta could not help but show his appreciation.

A pat on the butt is a normal celebration, but that’s a full-on ass massage. Or maybe it was bongo playing. Whatever the case, Vincenzo Iaquinta probably should rethink his goal celebrations. A high five might suffice next time.

The words “severe groin trauma” are something you never want to hear.

Inter Milan’s Mario Balotelli heard that diagnosis last Wednesday after this unfortunate incident in the Coppa Italia against Sampadoria.

Balotelli appeared to randomly collapse in the middle of the field. As players and trainers rushed to help, everyone else was wondering what caused him to go down.

Finally the replay came, and it was obvious what happened: Mario Balotelli had gone for a header, missed, and then performed an ill-advised pole dance.

Hitting a ball off the post is always disappointing, but that’s rough.

Referees have it tough. They have to make sure all of the players in a game aren’t doing anything they aren’t supposed to, while also keeping an eye on the rest of the action.

Sometimes though, the action gets just a bit too close. Last weekend in Italy’s Serie A match between Lazio and Torino, referee Massimiliano Saccani was looking the other way and turned his head just in time to get smacked in the face with the ball (around the 1:17 mark).

The game ended in a 1-1 tie, which coincidentally was the same fingers held up by the trainer to make sure Saccani could still see straight (well, for a referee at least).

An Italian soccer club is taking the idea of fostering relationships across borders to a whole new level.

Fourth division club Trentino 1921 has signed a sponsorship deal worth 10,000 Euros – with an escort service across the Austrian border in nearby Innsbruck.

The escort service is called Casa Bianca, or White House. According to the service, it is the “home of pleasure” and a “sensuous place to get everything you want.”

Through meticulous research on the brothel’s website (sorry guys, this is a family site – you’ll have to track it down yourselves), it appears one hour with a girl costs 180 Euros.

Let’s see… 10,000 Euros… divided by 180 Euros….

Trentino 1921 can now spend 55.55 hours at the brothel that is now sponsoring them.

Needless to say, the deal has caused some controversy, namely with the female councillor of sport, Iva Brasi, who said “If I am offended I can imagine that the women of the town must also feel as angry and as offended as I do. I hope that Trentino reconsider this agreement and remind them that they also receive council funds as well.”

The club likely responded by thanking Ms. Brasi for reminding them about the council funds, which they then took to go spend at the brothel.

Italian Soccer Coach Takes Ass Kicking to a Whole New Level

When someone says they are going to kick another team’s ass, it’s not usually taken as a literal statement.

Someone might want to tell that to Catania coach Silvio Baldini.

During Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Parma, Baldini got into an argument with his managerial counterpart, Domenico Di Carlo. As Di Carlo walked away, Baldini decided to get the last word by giving him a swift kick to the rear end. He was promptly ejected and has been the butt of many jokes on Italian television.

Following the match, Baldini said, “I say sorry to the fans of Parma. I am not [apologizing] to him because he deserved it, he provoked me.”

The lesson here, of course, is that it’s perfectly okay to kick someone in the ass if they deserved it. If someone turns the other cheek, that’s your opportunity to go right ahead and kick it.

We kick off this edition of Off the Woodwork with a video from a junior league match between Flamengo and Cruziero in Brazil. Watch as one player executes a perfect bicycle kick. Too bad it was right over the keeper into the back of his own net.

As I mentioned in the first edition, some European leagues began action this weekend, while other teams were playing in their final friendlies before their real action begins. By next weekend, all of the major European leagues will be playing except for Italy and Spain.

In Scotland, DaMarcus Beasley got his SPL action with Rangers as they won 3-0 over Inverness CT. Beasley’s speed was on show as he got a chance early on, but was unable to put it past the keeper.

Chinese officials have made yet another attempt to change the behavior of their nation in preparation of the 2008 Summer Games. This time, they are looking to stop fans from swearing at soccer games. Over the weekend, police were brought in to monitor behavior at games, detaining offenders if necessary.

“It is just way out of line to have 30,000 people shouting and swearing en masse,” police spokesman Liu Chunjiang was quoted as saying. “What we are trying to do is to give the right guidance in how to view a football match, not to impose anything on the spectators.”

Yeah, good luck with that one. Soccer fans worldwide are known for their ability to remain quiet and polite.
