Lionel Messi Drunk As Barcelona Celebrates Champions League Win And The Treble: Video

If your team just won the Champions League Final, as well as the Spanish La Liga crown and Copa del Rey, you’d probably drink a fair amount. So it’s perfectly acceptable that Barcelona star Lionel Messi would be getting drunk afterward.

Someone wisely handed Lionel a microphone so we could see just how drunk he was (answer: very).

Messi then drunkenly claimed that Barcelona would win the Treble again next year, which of course the fans loved.

Messi: ““Do you want the treble… here is the treble… and next year we will win it all again!”

He may have just been talking about the triple shot he just did, but we’ll see if Messi can come through on his drunken promise next year.

There are times when soccer fans just need to take a step back and realize that it’s just a game. This is definitely one of them.

Following yesterday’s 2-0 win by Barcelona over Manchester United in the Champions League Final, Barca fans took to the streets all over the world. While in Barcelona they understandably had a large party and riot, the violence spread elsewhere as well.

One Manchester United fan in Nigeria committed an unthinkable act, driving his bus past a crowd of Barcelona fans, but then making a U-turn and plowing in to them. Four people were killed and another ten were injured.

“He was displaying his anger at his team losing the match. The driver had passed the crowd then made a U-turn and ran into them,” spokesperson Rita Inomey-Abbey said.

It’s a sad day when your team wins a huge match, and you can’t celebrate without fear of someone hitting you with a bus.

When Samuel Eto’o scored the go-ahead goal for Barcelona today to send his team to a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Champions League final, he made one of the stranger goal celebrations in recent memory.

After putting the ball in the net, Eto’o ran down the pitch while desperately searching for a vein like a heroin addict.

Nothing says “family friendly football” like having a player acting like he’s doing heroin during the biggest match of the year. Why couldn’t he have just pretended to snort the touch line like a normal player?

Update: Eto’o has now said that his goal celebration was in tribute to “el sangre de mi padre” (the blood of his father). It still looked like he was searching for a vein.

Chelsea was dumped from the Champions League in controversial fashion against Barcelona, and nobody was more angry than Didier Drogba. Following the match, an incensed Drogba went after the referees, getting in their faces while yelling at them.

Drogba was given a card by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and will undoubtedly face more punishment, especially for what happened as he was leaving the field. He found one of the UEFA feed cameras and shouted into it repeatedly, saying “It’s a disgrace! It’s a disgrace! It’s a fucking disgrace!”

Maybe so, but a player shouldn’t be acting like that on the field & swearing live on the air.

We’ve all done it. Sometimes you think a folding chair is in the down position, but it’s really not, so you either fall down or bump into the seat badly on your way down.

Most of us don’t have such graceful moves recorded for posterity on live television, of course, unlike Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini, who struggled with his seat as his team struggled with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, crashing out of the Champions League.

Darren Fletcher runs from another violent bathroom door

The list of bizarre sports injuries just got a bit longer.

After helping Manchester United dump Lyon from the UEFA Champions League last week, Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher was heading to take one himself when he was a victim of a vicious attack – by a toilet door.

According to a Man U insider, Fletcher attempted to swing a bathroom door open when the door fell on his head, knocking him unconscious. Blood started pouring from his head, and the injury required stitches.

Said the staffer, “It seems that there was something seriously wrong with the toilet door. I don’t know if fittings had come loose or what – but when Darren went to open the door, it came away and clobbered him. It was a nasty wound but it could have been worse.”

And just for the hell of it, here are a few more weird sports injuries from the soccer world that we haven’t yet covered:

David Beckham once suffered a scraped head after being hit with a boot, allegedly kicked by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson
Chelsea goalkeeper Dave Beasant dropped a bottle on his foot, putting him out for a time. A similar injury happened to Spanish goalkeeper Santiago Canizares prior to the 2002 World Cup. Goalkeepers obviously can’t be trusted to hold things.
Leeds player David Batty had a child run over his ankle with a tricycle.
In 1970 the career of Brentford’s Goalie Chic Brodie was ended by injury following a mid-match collision with a dog that had invaded the pitch.
Barnsley’s Darren Barnard slipped in a puddle of his new dog’s pee on the kitchen floor. The resulting knee ligament damage kept him out of action for five months.
Back in the 70s, Norwegian International defender Svein Grondalen had to withdraw from an International game after an accident which happened while he was out jogging. He collided with a moose.
Spain (and Valencia) keeper Santiago Canizares was ruled out of the 2002 World Cup finals after a bottle of aftershave dropped on his foot caused cuts and serious tendon damage.
And just this past weekend, Dundee’s Derek Lyle missed a match after falling through a coffee table and cutting his stomach. He is also thrice divorced and lives in a van down by the river.

That’s it for now, at least until some other athlete gets hurt in a stupid way or gets attacked by an inanimate object. We can only hope that happens soon.

Earlier this week, Lyon traveled to Glasgow to face Rangers in a match that would determine which team would remain in this year’s Champions League.

With Rangers down 1-0, Jean-Claude Darcheville had a shot on goal. From about 2 yards away. With no goalkeeper in front of him. So what does he do? He manages to hit the top of the crossbar, and the ball goes out for a free kick. But hey, at least he put himself in the back of the net.

Rangers eventually lost 3-0, and will now have to settle for playing for the UEFA Cup in the new year instead.

During Tuesday night’s Champions League clash between Benfica and Celtic, Augustin Binya made a tackle on Celtic midfielder Scott Brown that can only be described as horrific.

After the match, Brown said, “[It's] shocking, I don’t think the guy should ever have done that. He obviously tried to do me as hard as possible.” (Michael Scott: ‘That’s what she said’)

Brown is very lucky that his leg was not snapped in half. Binya received an immediate red card, and is likely to face a strong suspension as UEFA will not look kindly on this.

As for Brown, he did leave the game (which Celtic won 1-0), but he should be fine, apart from a sore shin. He is expected to be available for Scotland’s crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Italy in 2 weeks.

O Valencia! Champions League match ends in brawl

Yesterday’s Champions League match between Valencia and Inter Milan ended in exciting fashion. Valencia advanced after winning 2-2 on aggregate due to the away goals rule, but after the match, a huge brawl broke out that spread over the entire pitch as well as the locker rooms.

Things to look out for:

David Navarro of Valencia, who didn’t even play in the match, running on to the pitch to punch Nicolas Burdisso of Inter Milan, breaking his nose, then running away like Carmelo Anthony
Several Inter Milan players trying to catch Navarro in comical fashion. A couple slip and fall down and another receives a kick for his trouble
A brawl in the stadium hallways as the Inter Milan goalkeeper enters the Valencia locker room
And of course… the play that started it all off. While the brawl was escalated by Burdisso and Navarro (with help from Carlos Marchena), what made Marchena so pissed off in the first place was the forearm thrown by Marco Materazzi on a pretty violent collision. Yes, that Marco Materazzi. Wherever there’s trouble, that’s where he’ll be!

All in all, a pretty good brawl for soccer players. They fight better than a lot of the NBA players we’ve seen recently & provided some entertaining moments. As the Champions League narrows down to the final few teams, we’ll certainly see some more heated battles.
