The South African National Anthem, sung terribly: Video

I’ll admit, I have no idea what South Africa’s National Anthem is supposed to sound like, but I know bad singing when I hear it.

South Africa visited France for a rugby match this past weekend and were treated to this abomination of a song.

The players valiantly belted the anthem out on their own, but could not conceal their horror as the singer butchered it.

Following the match South Africa’s John Smit said on Twitter, “Did everyone hear the new remix single of our national anthem by Bob Marley!!! I seriously thought we were being punked!”

Smit wasn’t the only one. The South African blog PharSide said it best:

As many of you may have seen yesterday and witnessed in absolute shock, the South African National Anthem was “sung” by some absolute tone deaf idiot who proved to everyone at the stadium aswell as everyone viewing on TV that he cannot sing to save his life, by constantly going off key and going to his own beat which wasn’t even to the beat of the rest of the music. I can honestly say that even my cat Pringles could have meowed the anthem better through the microphone. It was an absolute disgrace and complete mockery of our anthem and our nation.

You could see the look on the players faces that all that was going through their minds was WTF!

There’s nothing more to add to that, other than to say Pringles is an excellent name for a pet.

Huge Rugby Brawl In Romania: Video

CSU Arad and RCM Timisoara are two Romanian rugby teams, although you wouldn’t know it from this video of the two teams having a nice little brawl. They appear to be better suited for tag-team wrestling competitions or gang warfare.

RCM manager Danut Borzas said: “We received threats before the match. We have three players in hospital. They were punched and thrown to the ground and then kicked.”

Around 30 people were involved, including assistant coaches and trainers. The three players who were most seriously hurt had head injuries, including a broken nose and knocked-out teeth.

NRL referees are not difficult to see, as they wear bright pink. Still, Jamie Simpson of the South Sydney Rabbitohs somehow couldn’t avoid running into ref Tony De Las Heras during a match against the Brisbane Broncos last month.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Broncos player Tonie Carroll then nailed De Las Heras in the head with his knee as he was trying to get up, knocking him out cold.

Paramedics took the unconscious referee from the field, but according to the other referee, Gavin Badger, he was just fine afterward.

“As soon as it happened, I went straight to him,” Badger said. “He was knocked out straight away. But he’s OK now. It was a bit scary for us. He was snoring straight away, literally snoring. But he’s joking now about it, saying these sorts of things always happen to him.”

It’s always nice to see someone laughing about getting kicked in the head. It’s probably much easier when you can’t remember any of it.

Manly Sea Eagles Mascot Fights Fan Who Ran On The Field

The reason for my lack of posts the last couple of weeks is that I was on vacation in Australia. While I was there, I went to an NRL match, which I will be posting about next week. Unfortunately, I seem to have chosen the wrong match to attend, as the meeting between the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and Newcastle Knights featured a fan running on the field to fight the Sea Eagles’ mascot.

The guy obviously picked the wrong mascot to mess with, as the Sea Eagle tackled him. With some help from a real security guard, the man was subdued and removed. And thus, my goal of someday seeing a man fight a mascot in person was narrowly unfulfilled due to my poor choice of a game to attend.

Loose Chicken On The Field Before Rugby Match Between France and New Zealand: Video

It’s a slow time of year in sports, so let’s just declare today Chickens Running Around On The Field Day and be done with it.

Following the previous post of a loose chicken during a soccer match, here’s a video of a rooster at a rugby match between France and New Zealand’s All Blacks last month.

This one makes a bit more sense, as the rooster is the mascot of the French rugby team. Some poor security guard is the lone man charged with chasing the cock for the first part of the pursuit, with predictably poor results.

Once the chicken was safely off of the field, the match could begin. Later, a woman ran on the grass, and by this point the security guards had had enough.

Now there’s a solid tackle that will impress the coaches. Maybe that cocky chicken would have hesitated if he’d seen this woman get taken down first.

Drunk Rugby Player Gets Suspended After Defecating In Hotel Hallway

I will be heading to Australia in a couple of weeks, and I plan on taking in a rugby match while I am there. There are several teams in Sydney, but I think I have now figured out which one I will go watch: the Sydney Roosters.

A couple of weeks ago, their coach got drunk and tried to break into someone else’s hotel room.

Now one of the players, Nate Myles, has been suspended for 6 weeks after defecating in a hotel hallway.

An apologetic Myles claimed he had a stomach bug and had been locked out of the room, but the fact that this all happened after he and several other players were out partying until 4am does not make him a sympathetic figure.

“I had been asleep for about four hours and I got up to go to the toilet,” Myles said.

“It was dark and I was a bit dazed. The door to the toilet was right next to the entry door and I went through the wrong one.

“The door locked behind me and I was stranded.”

At this point, Myles tried to get into another hotel room, but for some reason the family who was staying there did not want to let a drunk, naked man with the runs into their room.

Following his corridor defecation, Myles was then found naked on his fire escape.

He paid for the cleaning, and the Sydney Roosters have been fined an additional $50,000 by the NRL for the latest of their team’s antics.

Between the drunken coach, the player who can’t control his bowels, and the general ineptitude of the team on the field, this is a side that clearly needs some support. I’m just going to make sure my hotel room door is double-locked at all times, and I will take careful steps down the hallway.

Coach Fines Himself $10,000 After Drunken Night Out

Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler has had a tough time lately. His team is mired in last place in Australia’s National Rugby League. Rumors have swirled that he is about to be replaced. It’s only natural that he might seek solace at the bottom of a bottle.

Unfortunately for Fittler, upon returning to his hotel after a drunken night out, he got off the elevator on the wrong floor and tried to break into the room that he thought was his, freaking out the two women who were inside.

The two occupants called the police, saying a “creepy man” with a “hairy chest” was trying to get into the room. When the police arrived, they escorted Fittler back to his room.

Then it was time to apologize. “I take this opportunity to apologise for my behaviour on Thursday night,” Fittler said in a press conference. “I brought embarrassment to the club, myself and my family. I’d also like to take this opportunity to apologise to the occupants of the room concerned. As a result I’ve fined myself $10,000 and that donation will be going to a suitable charity.”

Let’s hope he gets the suite number correct when he mails the check.

The details: This streaker is from the London Irish match at Madejski Stadium in Reading.

Egged on by the fans, this woman decided that the match needed to have her running naked across the pitch. And who’s going to argue with that?

Usually we get to see these streaker videos once the streaker has already started on his or her run. It’s nice to see how it all begins for once. The insight into the mind of an artist is truly remarkable.

Rugby Brawl In Romania: Video

Over the weekend, there was a quality rugby brawl in Romania.

The brawl occurred between Dinamo Bucaresti and Farul Constata of the Romanian Rugby League. Nine players were sent off, and nine players were so badly hurt in the fight that they had to be sent the hospital. They don’t mess around in Romania, do they?

Instead of going on about the fighting, just watch the videos. The highlight is definitely the guy with the ball who looks like he’s about to run off on a clear path, but then comes back to contribute to the fight by hitting a guy on the head with the ball.
