With the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver just a few months away, one would assume the lineup of events would be set in stone. But if a group of women ski jumpers gets their way, there could be a last-minute addition to the Games.

Led by Women’s Ski Jumping USA, a group of jumpers is suing Vanoc, the Vancouver organizers of the Olympics, claiming discrimination because there is a ski jumping event for men, but not for women.

This summer, a judge ruled that while not having an event for women was discriminatory, the IOC was not covered by the Canadian Charter of Rights, and thus was not required to hold events for both men and women. Vanoc is now being targeted as the Canadian representative of the IOC. The ski jumpers are hoping that a ruling against Vanoc will get their event added to the Olympics by the IOC.

While the case has moved through the legal system, the jumpers have remained positive, while the Vanoc has had no choice but to proceed as scheduled.

“I am optimistic that right will prevail,” said Deedee Corradini, the president of Women’s Ski Jumping USA, which has been pushing the case on behalf of a small group of female jumpers. “I have worked with the International Olympic Committee in the past and I cannot believe that if a court here were to order them to put on an event, that they would ignore such an order.”

But Renee Smith-Valade, a spokeswoman for Vanoc, said the organizing committee isn’t making any such plans.

“We don’t have a contingency plan for this,” she told reporters. “With less than 100 days to go, we are responsible for finalizing the preparations for an event that is the equivalent of staging three Super Bowls a day for 17 consecutive days. If and when we are instructed by the IOC to make changes to our planning, we will do so. But at this time, we are completely focused on delivering the 2010 sport program as it currently exists.”

This is a fascinating case to test how much power the IOC should have in comparison to a nation’s laws. Yes, they are an international entity, but at the same time, each country the Games are held in has its own laws. A ruling in favor of the jumpers could limit the power of the IOC, but down the line could also have the effect of impacting which countries will host the Games in the future if the IOC doesn’t want to run afoul of local laws.

Closing arguments will be held on Friday. If the jumpers win, things could get pretty interesting in Vancouver.

In an economy where entertainment venues and sports facilities are fighting for a smaller pool of money, a good advertising idea is crucial.

The Tryvann Winter Park ski resort just outside Oslo, Norway has come up with a brilliant idea to promote their skiing.

Tryvann is located just 15 minutes outside Oslo, but being in the mountains, the conditions can be much different than in the city itself.

So advertising company TBWA came up with a bus stop billboard that had a clear window that was filled with snow. If it started to snow at Tryvann, a text message could be sent to the advertisement, which would then generate a mini-snow storm using fans to blow around fake snow.

The tagline on the ad is:”If it’s snowing in here, it’s snowing up at Tryvann.”

What a great way to let skiers know what the snow conditions are like, while also getting people’s attention. It’s effective, while also not infecting your head like a jingle.

What is it with skiers and cocaine these days? Just last week we brought you the story of wannabe skiers who brought drugs to cops, hoping to score some free lift tickets. Now, a member of the Lebanese ski team (which apparently exists) has tested positive for coke.

Georges Salameh tested positive for cocaine following the skiing world championships in France last month. He now faces up to a 2 year suspension from the International Skiing Federation (FIS).

According to FIS secretary general Sarah Lewis, “The ‘B’ Sample confirmed the results of the ‘A’ sample containing the prohibited substance benzoylecgonine—a metabolite of cocaine—from the test in Val d’Isere.”

Salameh is the national champion of Lebanon in slalom and giant slalom. As for how he fared at the world championships, he completed neither event, as he presumably was coked out of his mind.

Most of us would know not to respond to a Craigslist ad promising ski lift tickets in exchange for drugs.

Some people, however, do not. Those people are sitting in the Mono County Jail after being arrested at Mammoth Lakes, California.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Department posted an ad on Craigslist that offered people free lift tickets to the ski resort if people just gave them their drugs. Amazingly, six Southern California residents fell for this scheme, bringing their narcotics up to the snow at Mammoth to get their free skiing & snowboarding.

The desperate powder enthusiasts who were arrested are Molly Malloy, 27, and Gene Farley, 34, from Huntington Beach and Joshua Martin, 28, and Christopher Nichols, 30, from Newport Beach, as well as Jonathan Morrison, 21, of Highland Park and Travis Jennings, 22, of San Luis Obispo. Those are their IQs, not their ages.

The sting operation netted “about 1 pound of marijuana, one-fourth ounce of cocaine, “ecstasy” tablets and a variety of prescription medications.”

Not knowing much about drug prices, it’s doubtful that all of that is worth a couple of free lift tickets. It’s definitely not worth getting arrested for & having your name published and laughed at all over the Internet.

There are several reasons why I don’t ski.

1. I have the coordination of a newborn giraffe.
2. I find 50 degree days to be unbearably cold.
3. I don’t want to end up dangling from a chairlift with no pants on.

In Vail, Colorado, a man ended up getting stuck in this embarrassing position on a ski lift, bare ass and everything else exposed to the cold air and the cameras of onlookers.

Apparently, the fold-down seat was not in the proper position, which led to the man falling through the chair. His ski got caught, and in the process, his pants got stuck as well, leaving him dangling with no pants on.

He was freed after about 15 minutes, which is 15 minutes longer than any sane person wants to be pantsless in the snow.
