Remember Paul Hamm? That gymnast you were subjected to watching while you hoped NBC would show some other sport during the 2004 Olympics? Hamm is currently serving as a gymnastics coach at Ohio State, and he’s been charged with trying to start a new sport: Assaulting a taxi driver and refusing to pay for his ride.

According to Columbus police:

After an argument, Hamm damaged a window of the cab, punched and kicked [the driver].

The driver called police and when they arrived, police said they struggled to get Hamm under control.

In video released by police, Hamm is heard talking with a police officer.

“All the sudden looking at my wallet and I’m looking at a situation, I don’t have my ID,” Hamm said.

The officer then replied, “That’s cause I have it man. You gave it to me less than 5 minutes ago.”

When the officer asked Hamm how many drinks he had consumed, Hamm said he had “probably 8 drinks.”

During the arrest, an officer on the scene used his police radio to call for assistance. The officers tried to gain control of Hamm. Hamm is heard on the video saying, “You guys are so funny. You guys have no idea. I’m going to kill you guys.”

In a world where at least a couple of pro athletes are nabbed for drunk driving every week, it’s great that Hamm knew enough to call a cab. But if drunk celebrities are going to keep attacking Ohio’s transportation operators, eventually we’ll hear about a sloshed Betty White stabbing a blimp pilot.

Our next blooper video comes from a sport where the competitors fall quite frequently: gymnastics. Gymnasts put themselves through a lot. I don’t know how they do it, since I fall over just standing up. Those who can’t do a particular sport laugh at others who fall down sometimes when they do.

By this point, 99% of the American population is aware of The Onion, the satirical newspaper/audio-visual conglomerate. Every now and then though, there’s that other 1% that thinks it’s a legitimate news source.

A recent video piece by The Onion said that gymnast Shawn Johnson had fallen from the uneven bars while training and broken her knee. She was then euthanized.

The fake news interview with Shawn’s family is a funny send-up of pushy parents as well as the differences of how we treat horses vs. humans. Not everyone is laughing though.

Some people, including one of Johnson’s former teammates, think that the video is crossing the line. So far, her family’s response was through Johnson’s publicist Susan Madore who said, “At this time there will be no comment from Shawn or her parents about the video.”

That’s probably the best idea. Getting offended will only make the video an even bigger hit for The Onion.

The Pan-American games are going on right now. I wouldn’t have known either had I not read that story the other day about the Brazilian fencer getting stabbed by his brother.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro sure does know about the games though. He has been watching so much of the coverage that he has been forgetting to eat and take his medication.

Castro said: “I hardly take my eyes off the television. Sometimes I forget the time of some food or some pill. I don’t miss an event on the television: weightlifting, taekwando, rowing, cycling, beach volleyball.”

He also applauded women’s artistic gymnastics, calling it a “beautiful sport”.

Let’s see… beach volleyball, women’s gymnastics. We know what sort of pill Fidel is NOT forgetting to take.
