Canadians refused to board Air Canada flight during Olympic gold medal game

We’ve all been there. You’re traveling somewhere & end up watching a game in an airport bar, only to find that it’s time to board and the game isn’t over yet.

Some Canadian travelers on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver unwisely booked their flights for during the gold medal match with the United States. I guess they didn’t think Canada would make it to the final.

As airline staff tried to get them on the plane, the fans refused to budge, staying to watch the game on TV instead.

“We incurred a flight delay for a reason Air Canada had not yet encountered in over 72 years of existence,” said chief executive Calin Rovinescu.

The airline indeed delayed the flight until Canada had won. This never would have happened in the United States, since the flight never would have been on time in the first place.

Ladies and gentlemen, here’s the shortest fight in NHL history.

Daniel Carcillo of the Philadelphia Flyers managed to K.O. the Caps’ Matt Bradley with one punch following a cross-check. Bradley did drop his gloves, but Carcillo punched him about 2 milliseconds later and down he went.

The referees took pity on Bradley and didn’t give him a penalty, while Carcillo managed to rack up an impressive 29 penalty minutes in about 3 seconds.

Keith Ballard slashes teammate Tomas Vokoun: Video

Today’s Worst Person in the World: Keith Ballard of the Florida Panthers.

Following a goal by the Atlanta Thrashers’ Ilya Kovalchuk, Ballard angrily smashed his stick against his own net. Or at least, that’s what he tried to do. His own teammate, goalie Tomas Vokoun, was still in the crease and started to stand up just as Ballard swung his stick.

Ballard then smashed Vokoun in the head instead of hitting the net. The slash resulted in Vokoun being taken off the ice on a stretcher. While Ballard certainly feels bad, swinging a stick like that when a teammate is nearby is moronic.

According to the Miami Herald, it appears that Vokoun will be okay, aside from being shocked that his own teammate would hit him in the head like that.

Henrik Andersen is only 18, so he’s not only fairly new to professional hockey, he’s also new to goal celebrations. Anderson scored his first goal of the season for Sweden’s Leksand and immediately tried an Ovechkin-style celebration by crashing into the glass.

Not only did he crash into it, he crashed right through it. It seems nobody had been checked in that spot yet this season, or else someone at the arena might have been aware that the glass had been attached with velcro and rubber cement.

There are few cases where moving from a GM role into a coaching role has worked out. For more evidence, look no further than Brent Sapergia of the Louisiana IceGators. Sapergia temporarily took over coaching duties of the team and ended up being indefinitely banned from coaching after an epic tirade that featured him throwing sticks on the ice.

As Sapergia threw out the entire contents of the bench, the nearby players fixed their gaze straight ahead, lest they make eye contact with their coach and get tossed on to the ice next. All the while they are clearly thinking, “This dude is nuts, and why did I ever agree to play hockey for a team in Louisiana?”

Idaho junior hockey team in trouble for playing strip hockey

Last week, the Tampa Bay Lightning had some fun at practice and played strip hockey. Players were forced to remove an item of equipment if they did not score in a shootout.

While the Lightning haven’t inspired many through their gameplay so far this season, their stripping antics did influence the Idaho Junior Steelheads, who held a strip hockey shootout of their own last Wednesday in Boise.

Unfortunately for the Steelheads, not everyone was amused by their on-ice exposure. A parent whose daughter was ice skating on a nearby rink saw the 17- to 20-year-old players taking off their clothes and called a hotline. Yes, Boise apparently has a “young hockey players are stripping” hotline. Graham James has it on speed-dial.

The team has been banned from the practice facility for one week, while one player who stripped completely to moon a teammate has seen additional punishment.

“His behavior didn’t live up to our player code of conduct,” said Steelheads owner John Olver.

There is also an investigation underway to see if public decency laws were violated. Boise does not allow residents to bare their buttocks in public, with exemptions for the arts. For a state called “Idaho”, they’re really quite prudish.

At the end of tonight’s Stanley Cup Finals Game 2 between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins star Evgeni Malkin tried to start a fight with Henrik Zetterberg of the Red Wings.

With his team leading the game 3-1, about to take a 2-0 series lead, Zetterberg had zero interest in fighting Malkin and only started fighting back when it became clear that Malkin was hellbent on doing battle and the referees weren’t going to stop him.

Both players received fighting majors, while Malkin also received a penalty for instigating. This penalty is supposed to draw a one game suspension, but since the NHL doesn’t want this series to end in a sweep, he’ll get to play in Game 3 in Pittsburgh.

Note to the NHL: Just because random enforcement of the rules works for the NBA doesn’t mean it will work for your league as well.

Last night, the Detroit Red Wings earned a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals by beating the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in OT in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

If you think that all of their fans would be happy on such an occasion, you’d be wrong. Check out this fan who angrily flipped the double bird toward the referee during the game.

Adam Burish Nearly Gets His Throat Slashed By A Skate Blade: Video

Adam Burish is a very lucky man.

During Sunday’s 5-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, the Chicago Blackhawks forward had his throat cut by teammate Ben Eager’s skate. Eager had fallen forward and kicked upward with his skate while doing so.

After the game, Burish reflected on the injury. “I don’t know how I’m so darn lucky,” Burish said. “It was centimeters, millimeters away from slicing (his throat).”

“I don’t know how my head is still connected here,” he said. “I saw his skate — it was like he did a figure skating move and kind of whipped his skate up. I just watched it go right into my neck.”

When you see an incident like this, you immediately think of Clint Malarchuk and Richard Zednik, but fortunately for Adam Burish, the skate only grazed him and left him with a cut. Had the skate gone just a bit further, or if he didn’t have that beard, he would have been in serious trouble.
