High School Umpire Ejects Entire Crowd

We’ve all encountered someone who let a little bit of power get to their heads.

Give someone the ability to eject someone else, and there’s always the possibility they’ll go overboard like Iowa high school baseball umpire Don Briggs.

Briggs was umpiring a game between Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington when he managed to eject the entire crowd – over 100 people in all.

The incident occurred when Winfield-Mount Union coach Scott McCarty came out to argue a call.

According to Briggs, the crowd became unruly, but both managers dispute this point. Briggs then ejected the whole crowd, even calling for police backup to get everyone out.

The game was stopped for 40 minutes as people slowly left. Many of them moved a whole 30 feet away off of school property. You sure did show them, Don.

“I know it sounds like I’m the bad guy — but it was the crowd,” Briggs said. “If I got the control to ask one person to leave, I feel like I can ask them all to leave.”

Eventually, school superintendent James Sleister showed up and convinced Briggs that he was being ridiculous. Play resumed, but only under one condition: Nobody present could say anything negative, or else they would be ejected. Freedom of speech does not extend to Iowa baseball games.

As if this wasn’t enough excitement, the resumed game had plenty of action. Winfield-Mount Union choked away an 11-3 5th inning lead, only to lose 12-11 as West Burlington stole home in the 7th and final inning.

Patrick Schuster has done it again.

Last week we brought you the story of the Florida high school pitcher who had thrown 3 straight no-hitters. Schuster started again last night, and he threw yet another no-hit game.

Schuster led his Mitchell High School team to a 5-0 win over Pasco High, striking out 17 en route to victory.

The no-hitter, which was Schuster’s 4th consecutive & 5th overall this season, sets a Florida high school baseball record, and puts him 2 short of the national record.

He hasn’t given up a hit since March 24th. After the game, Schuster said, “I walked in today saying, ‘Everyone is going to be disappointed in me because I’m going to give up a hit. Look, it’s going to happen one of these games. When it happens, I won’t be disappointed. Hopefully, it’s at the beginning of a game. What has happened so far, there’s no way anybody could expect that. We’re just going to keep on riding with it.”

His teammates have been behind him every step of the way, even if they did attempt to kill him by piling on him at the end of the game.

Patrick Schuster’s next scheduled start is April 28th in the Class 6A-District 7 tournament semifinals.

Patrick Schuster is good.

He’s so good that he’s pitched no-hitters in three straight games for his Mitchell Mustangs high school baseball team.

The streak began against Land O’Lakes with a 17-strikeout, seven-inning no-hitter on April 3. The next team to fall victim to Patrick Schuster was River Ridge, when he fanned 10 in a five-inning, 10-0 win five days later. Schuster’s most recent triumph came against Clearwater Central Catholic, when he struck out 16 banners en route to his third straight no-hitter.

As his streak has gone on, the pressure has increased. Schuster’s last start was in front of several Major League scouts.

“I tell you what, he’s just in a zone right now,” Mustangs coach Scot Wilcox said. “It’s like business. He went to work. There were a lot of scouts there and a lot of anticipation and he lived up to it.”

Schuster said, “It’s great. I can’t think of a more perfect time for this. There were 15-20 scouts there and most of them were bosses of guys watching me. I’m having a blast right now.”

As for his future, Schuster has signed with the University of Florida, but that of course is pending the MLB Draft. A kid who can toss no-hitters like that will certainly be coveted.

He’ll go for his 4th straight no-hitter on April 20th. If his opponents “celebrate” that day, his chances will be pretty good.
