It’s the time of year where kids go outside into backyards and play football (when they aren’t playing video games). Unfortunately for 7-year-old Brandon Hiles of Wintersville, Ohio, it’s also mating season for deer, and his backyard football game with a friend interfered with the plans of a couple of young bucks.

After their encounter, Brandon said, “We were playing football and the ball rolled down into the woods. I went to go get it and the deer starting charging at me.”

“I started running, but then I looked back and he was getting attacked and I grabbed a stick and started beating it,” said his friend, Wyatt Pugh.

The police officer who was called to the scene explained, “The male deer are coming into rut. What that means is, they’re starting to get aggressive. Their hormones are starting to come into play.” The kids just happened to be playing football right between two bucks who were about to have a battle.

The attacking deer left Brandon with bruises and a gash from one of its horns, plus a nice story about his run-in with a deer to tell the other kids at school.

As for the deer, it has been signed by the Detroit Lions and will start this Sunday if it’s not too busy with any neighborhood does.
